Help victims/survivors of Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault

• HB 375 (Rep. Aimee Freeman) allows sexual assault survivors to break leases without incurring penalties. The majority of sexual assaults occur at or near the survivors’ home. Survivors should not have to be re-live their assault every single day for months on end, returning to a place familiar to the perpetrator of their assault. This legislation would help students who are survivors. It would not be a major burden on landlords. It would require survivors to communicate with their landlord, and many landlords already allow survivors to break their leases without penalty, but others do not because of the lack of legal obligation to do so.
